Elyria Bike Coop is about to take off

The following is taken from the May 26 Face Book page of Bike Elyria:

Getting closer by the hour to setting up shop, so to speak. We expect we will be in a location next week.

In a post from yesterday we mentioned a wish list would be available for anyone wanting to help us get started. That list is accessible here. You can print out the file.

Note that if you have something you would rather loan to the project, that can be arranged also. we would label the item as to its original owner and if/when you need it returned all we do is make that happen. We appreciate any support offered.

The list is lengthy because we are basically starting from scratch with next to nothing. If you have any questions you can contact Ed Stewart for help. We are not quite ready today to receive items but probably next wee will.

Donations of goods or other assets are tax deductible. We are a non-profit 501 c 3 education organization.

We will of course be accepting good used bicycles and accessories soon – but not yet (no place to house them yet). More information on that will be forthcoming probably next week.

Thank you for the support you have offered. Friends of Bikers are the best!

Bullocks Parkway Bridge Closed 4-17 to 5/8

The Lorain County Engineer announced in today’s Chronicle that bridge work on the Leo Bullocks Industrial Parkway (2nd and 3rd Streets) will be closed for maintenance work. Passage is closed to all vehicles, including bikes.

We have a good alternate route to use from the parking lot on Gateway at Woodford. This uses Woodford then garden St. then Infirmary Rd. then Murray Ridge Rd. then Albrecht over to the bike trail. This sounds like a messy alternate but it is flatter – you do not have to climb the bridge overpass. You also avoid riding illegally going against traffic in the bike lane when heading west on Third Street.

Another option is to use the parking lot at Butternut Ridge Road as your starting-ending point. This was created last season by the Lorain County Metro Parks and is pretty nice. There are other routes of course but most seem to like these the best.

Here is a printable file showing the alternate route. the green line is the bike trail, the dotted blue line is the alternate route.

Another option on weekends would be to use the parking lot at Murray Ridge School on Murray Ridge Road, just south of Albrecht Rd. The trail is less than a mile from there, on Albrecht.

Public Meetings For Lorain County Connectivity

Coming up soon (April 29 and May 4) are public meetings for your input on important developments for our county. In particular, this is your chance to tell those who make changes that we need more bikeways in the county. Not just along the lake shore, which is good, but also that we have very poor north-south connections in the county.

Try to attend at least one of these sessions. Bring your friends and fellow bikers. Squeaky wheels get the most attention you know.

Spring 2017 Calendar

Bike Elyria has filled up our spring calendar like never before. For most of April and May we are offering rides at two per week – once during the week and once on weekends. There are some exceptions but that is our goal. And mixed in with the ride are some Bike Safety Checks and a few other activities offered to special groups.

Here is a file of the schedule you can print for your own use.

Three-Foot Passing Law Becomes Real

On March 21, 2017 Ohio’s three-foot passing law becomes real. Is it good or less than what we want or need? Of course we always want more… who doesn’t? But is this law enough?

Maybe. But it is all we have for now so we must learn to use it as best we can until our legislators create something better, which may be a long wait. They could have put more teeth into the punishment side of it, like castrate those who intentionally drive too close. But then, how do we prove any such thing anyway?

Our local Elyria Bicycle Advisory Committee created a one-page news brief on this subject and that covers it pretty well, in what is good and less than good about the new law. that article is accessible here: 3-foot bike law

First Meeting yields Constitution and Officers

In its first membership meeting, the group voted in our Constitution and By Laws and elected our first president and treasurer.

It was a busy meeting, including discussion of the 2016 Annual Report and our ambitious calendar presented along with the items up for election.

Our Constitution and By Laws can be found here:   bike-elyria-constitution-and-bylaws

Officers elected during the meeting were President, Ed Stewart and for Treasurer, Betsy Miles. The positions of vice President and secretary remain unfilled at this time. The constitution allows for the organization to operate with absences like this.

The first discussion area was about our first Annual Report for 2016. A printable version of that report can be found here:   2016-annual-report

The next meeting for the organization will be held on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the Elyria YWCA Conference Room, 318 West Ave., Elyria. During this meeting those present will discuss our calendar for the spring and set some dates for other events to be held throughout the year.

Bike Elyria First Annual Membership Meeting

Coming up soon will be BEs first Annual Meeting for members.

The meeting will be held on Sunday, February 26 at the Elyria Public Library West Branch on West River Road near Midway Mall. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. The purpose of the meeting will be to vote on a constitution and bylaws and to elect officers. This will also be a good time for new members to join and current members to rejoin.

Check this site often for any updates we will be posting here.

One item will be our first Annual Report to let members and sponsors know how our first year went. For a first year it was pretty good and we look forward to making our second year even better.

We set up a registration procedure using Eventbrite. Please register so we know how many to prepare for. Here is a link to the registration
